The National High School Musical Awards (also known as the Jimmy Awards) is a national celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theatre that recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and actng performance. The Jimmys impact more than 50,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theatre competitions in their own region throughout the U.S. A Best Actor and best Actress from each competition is sent to New York for a week-long theatre intensive of coaching and rehearsals with industry professionals in preparation for their Broadway stage debut at the Jimmy Awards show where an esteemed panel of judges crowns the nations top performers.
Tucson high schools can compete in this competition by entering the Tucson Starlight Awards – High School Musical Theatre Finals. Organized by Broadway in Tucson and Arts Express, jurors (professional arts educators and theatre artists) will review each participating high school musical. A selection of finalists will be selected to participate in the regional competition to be held in Tucson in early May (see schedule below). The winners of the Tucson Starlight Awards will go on to compete in New York at the Jimmy Awards. All candidate’s expenses for the local and national competition are paid.
FINALIST ANNOUNCEMENTS AND REGISTRATION
Announcement of contestants will be made on February 15th (for Fall Shows), by March 31st (for Spring Shows) and within 72 hours of the adjudication of the production for all shows thereafter.
Within 5 days of announcement, the parent/guardian of each TSA contestant must register giving permission and confirming availability of their student to compete on the local and national level. As part of registration process, a 50-word bio and headshot are due. Sheet music of the selected Primary Song from the adjudicated High School musical is due no later than April 8th.
PHASE I (April 7th-16th) All Contestants will prepare a two-minute segment of a solo song from their school performance and participate in the following: April TBD: Coaching to finalize two-minute segment of Primary Song – 1.5 hours of coaching in small groups (3-4 students). Scheduled online at mutual convenience of coaches and students. April TBDth (Time TBD): Audition Workshop April TBDth: Individual Auditions with Primary Song April TBDth: Production Group and Medley Group (Semi-Finalists) announced! Division is based on school adjudication and individual audition (see Scoring below).
PRODUCTION GROUP AND MEDLEY GROUP Based on the 4/14 adjudication, all So AZ Musical Theatre Awards contestants will perform in the May 12th regional event as follows:
- Production Group: Will perform in three group numbers at the regional event (Opening and Closing Numbers and Production Number) and are eligible for selection as a Production Group Finalist. Production Group Finalists are selected based on a second adjudication of their Primary Song on May 12th. Production Group Finalists (1-2 students) will perform their Primary Song at the May 13th event and are eligible for Best Actor/Best Actress awards.
- Medley Group: Will perform Opening and Closing Numbers as well as the male/female medley at the regional event that will include a solo of their Primary Song. The top 6-8 Medley Group Finalists will also perform their Contrasting Song at the May 12th event and are eligible for Best Actor/Best Actress awards.

Individual adjudications of Primary (All Contestants) and Contrasting Songs (Medley Group only) Sunday, May TBDth: Full day rehearsal with all contestants and show at 7:00 pm TUCSON STARLIGHT AWARDS Tucson Starlight Awards will be Sunday 5/12 at 7:00 pm at the Fox Theatre. BEST ACTOR AND BEST ACTRESS May 13th – June TBD: The Tucson Starlight Awards Best Actress and Best Actor will each receive four 1 hour sessions with the vocal/acting coach to prepare for nationals. June TBD: The top two contestants (one male and one female) from the regional contest will go to the national contest in NYC. The National High School Musical Theater Awards will take place on Monday, June TBD, 2019, at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. The program will also include a week-long theater intensive in New York City. All expenses are paid for the participants.
