SYNOPSIS: Based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, Peter and the Starcatcher explores how a young orphan ultimately became Peter Pan.Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). A wildly theatrical adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s best-selling novels, the play was conceived for the stage by directors, Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, and written by Rick Elice, with music by Wayne Barker. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair... and the bonds of friendship, duty and love.

Meet the Directors

Richard Gremel, Director

Richard Gremel is the theatre teacher at Empire High School. He graduated from the University of Arizona with a BFA in theatre education. Along with teaching, Richard is also a technical director for Live Theatre Workshop and a freelance lighting designer. Richard also enjoys playwriting and has  written several plays that have been seen on Tucson stages, as well as, eight published plays that have been seen all over the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, and India.

Mike Padilla, Music Director

A native of Tucson, Mike has entertained and worked in Tucson, San Francisco and Japan as a cabaret entertainer, pianist, singer, actor, musical director and teacher.  He spent 17 years in San Francisco where he studied acting/singing at Studio ACT and the SF Academy of Performing Arts where he was mentored by Richard Nickol.  As an actor he has played Archie & Dr Craven in The Secret Garden, Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, Dr Parker in Bay Boy, Cladwell in Urinetowne to name a few.  Locally, He’s done musical direction for the Invisible Theatre, SALOC, The Gaslight, The Great American Playhouse, UofA’s Arizona Repertory Theatre, Arts Express and CYT. He has been the vocal coach/music director for the Tucson Starlight Awards (Ben Vereen Awards) the last 4 years as well as ATC’s Summer on Stage. Mike was an instructor at the UofA School of theatre for 4 years serving as the staff pianist, vocal coach and musical director. Mike is a member of NATS (Nat’l. Assoc. of Teachers of Singing) and maintains a private voice studio.

Samantha Adams - Alf

Sam so happy to be a part of the Arts Express family. This is her fifth show with Arts Express and I've made friends here that I will keep for life. Favorite past roles have been Rumpelteaser in CATS and Sandra Bloom in this past summer's production of Big Fish.

I’ve been working with arts express for many years now, and every minute has been wonderful. I’ve met people that have taught me more than I could’ve ever hoped to learn on my own. This show will be my sixth arts express production, and I hope you enjoy it as much, if not more, than our other work.

Jake Harrell - Peter

Jake is a senior at Ironwood Ridge High School. He has been acting since his sophomore year, and this is his third show with arts-express. He is so excited to play this part and share this wonderful show with you all! He would also like to thank James Dean, Beyoncé, and God; in that order.

Kasey Kuhlmann - Ted
Kasey began performing five years ago with his beloved Room Service cast. Since then, he’s been a part of dozens of productions, playing roles such as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls, and Jack in Into the Woods. Kasey hopes you enjoy this show and, as always, he dedicates this show to his mother who always encouraged him to take the stage.
Mike Manolakes - Black Stache

This is Mike's first production with Arts Express, but he is a veteran with nearly forty years' experience in community theatre, mainly in the Chicago suburbs.  He and his wife Rae have recently relocated to Tucson and are glad to be performing with this exciting troupe.  Some of his many favorite performances have been roles in Harvey, Arsenic and Old Lace, Guys and Dolls, The Foreigner, Fiddler on the Roof, and Hello Dolly.

Sarah Maxwell - Molly Aster

Sarah is absolutely ecstatic to be living out one of her childhood dreams and sharing the stage with Peter Pan in her first show with Arts Express! She’s currently a senior at Empire High School and has been acting for nearly 7 years through school and theaters around Tucson! She's been in numerous productions including Legally Blonde (Enid Hoopes) Seussical (Gertrude McFuzz) and The Addams Family (Wednesday Addams). Special thanks to her “wife,” and Drottz as well as her other family and friends for their endless love and support!

Kira Lynn Tselentis - Greggors
Randy Waltrip - Smee

     Though a newcomer to Tucson, Randy has been active for many years in musical theater, both in Flagstaff, Arizona and in Murray, Kentucky. Some of his favorite roles have been as Max in The Sound Of Music, Perchik in Fiddler On The Roof, the Tin Man in The Wizard Of Oz, Seymour in Little Shop Of Horrors, the Police Sergeant in The Pirates Of Penzance, Bert Healy in Annie, and Albert Peterson in Bye, Bye Birdie. Randy is happy to be performing again, and to share acting in this hilarious production with his wife Sharon and his daughter Wendy.

Sharon Waltrip - Grempkin

Sharon has enjoyed participating in community theater in Flagstaff, Arizona (10 years) and Murray, Kentucky (12 years). Favorite shows include Fiddler on the RoofWhite ChristmasMusic ManLove, Loss, and What I WoreOliver!and so many others! She has had lots of fun performing as a family and is happy to have found Arts Express now that she is living in Tucson. She is impressed with the whole cast and crew and knows you will enjoy this hilarious play.

Wendy Waltrip - Mack

Wendy is a sophomore at the University of Arizona, majoring in Theatre Arts and Creative Writing, and is extremely excited to be performing in her first show with Arts Express. She has been acting since she was three years old and has loved every minute of every show. Some of her favorite roles include Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank, Beth March in Little Women the Musical, and Beth Bradley in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She would like to thank her parents for introducing her to the theatrical world, supporting her every step of the way, and making Peter Pan a huge part of her life by giving her a Neverland-worthy name.

Rae Williams - Mrs. Bumbrake

This is Rae’s 44th time onstage in a community theatre production, although she’s done some form of tech for at least twice as many shows.  Some of Rae’s favorite roles were Gwen/Debbie in “Footlight Frenzy”, Betty in "The Foreigner", Mary in “Run For Your Wife”, Dottie/Mrs. Clackett in “Noises Off!”, Cookie in “Rumors”, Olive in “The Odd Couple”, Golde in “Fiddler On The Roof”, Dolly in “Hello, Dolly!”, and Princess Puffer in “Drood”.  During her 48 years in theatre, she’s performed every job onstage and behind the scenes.  Rae thanks everyone involved in the show for putting up with her, and hopes you enjoy the show.
