Fine Arts Youth Academy 2009 Course Descriptions:

Band: This class will give instrumental students the ability to focus on and build on skills learned during the school year. The focus will be both on concert music as well as opportunities for students to work on small ensemble and solo material. Students need to have a minimum one year band during the school year no guitar or keyboard. (Teacher: Michelle Sigfus)

Choir: This class will focus on good vocal technique using a variety of music sung in English as well as other languages. Students will learn to sing in unison, 2 and 3 part harmonies. The class will develop vocal skills as well as teach students to work in large and small groups. Opportunities for solo and small groups will be available for those who wish as well full ensemble pieces. No prior singing knowledge is needed. (Teacher: Michelle Sigfus)

Ceramics/Sculpture: This class will give students an opportunity to explore a variety of construction techniques including pinch, coil and slab construction. Students will also learn about glazing and firing techniques. These techniques will be used in the creation of both functional and sculptural works. (Teacher: Tempest Alabi-Isama)

Junior Musical Theatre: (Students entering grades 5-9) Using the junior version of Seussical this class will allow students to experience auditioning, memorizing, singing, dancing, acting and blocking as well as set and prop designing. The experience will conclude with public performances on June 24 and June 25 at Naylor Middle School. (Teacher: Jennifer Draper)

Visual Arts: This class will take the student on a journey from beginning artist to advanced/intermediate artist through instruction in various art techniques in drawing and painting. They will learn the proportions of the human face and understand portrait illustration. (Teacher: Tempest Alabi-Isama)

 

Mission: The Fine Arts Youth Academy seeks to provide access to the arts for every child in our community. Through this experience with the arts, the academy strives to improve the quality of life for all participants.

Goals: Encourage artistic experiences among children. Build student knowledge of the arts. Create interaction with local artists. Integrate the arts with other curricular disciplines. Expand current and future audiences for the arts.
