    Arts Express’ Amateur Production of CATS – Music By ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER Based on “Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats” By T.S. ELIOT* First performance at The New London Theatre, London May 11,1981 presented by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Theatre Co. Limited – Originally presented in America by The Shubert Organization, Cameron Mackintosh, The Really Useful Company and David Geffen Original Broadway production Directed by Trevor Nunn – Associate Directed and Choreography by Gillian Lynne Designed by John Napier – Orchestration by David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

    This purr-fect theatrical masterpiece is locally produced for the first time ever on the Tucson stage!  Cats is a record-breaking musical phenomenon!   Based on the whimsical poems of T.S. Elliot, this wonderfully imaginative show features breathtaking music, including one of the most treasured songs in musical theater – “Memory.” Winner of 7 Tony Awards® including BEST MUSICAL, CATS tells the story of one magical night when an extraordinary tribe of cats gathers for its annual Jellicle Ball.

    Based on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside Layer. A true musical theatre phenomenon, CATS opened at London’s New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years. CATS’ London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran at the Wintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years.
